Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (ドラゴンボールＺゼット Doragon Bōru Zetto, lit. Dragon Ball Z), also known as Dragon Ball Z: The Movie, and later referred to as Dragon Ball Z: Return My Gohan!! (ドラゴンボールＺ オラの悟飯をかえせッ！！ Doragon Bōru Zetto Ora no Gohan o Kaese!!) in Japan, is the fourth Dragon Ball movie and the first under the Dragon Ball Z banner.

It premiered on July 15 at the 1989 Toei Cartoon Festival (along with movies from the Akuma-kun, Himitsu no Akko-chan, and Mobile Cop Jiban series). It was originally titled simply Dragon Ball Z: The Movie during its theatrical release. It was then dubbed into English by the Canadian company Ocean Productions in 1997 for the American company Funimation, the title being changed to Dead Zone. It was then re-dubbed by Funimation itself in 2005.

Timeline placement
Dead Zone is the only film that takes place after the end of Dragon Ball and before the beginning of Dragon Ball Z.[2] This film and Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge are the only two Dragon Ball movies featured on the Dragon Ball timeline in Daizenshuu 7.

Son Goku 孙悟空

He is Bardock and Gine's youngest son, the husband of Chi-Chi, and the father of Gohan and Goten. Son Goku is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama. He is based on Sun Wukong (known as Son Goku in Japan and Monkey King in the West), a main character of the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, combined with influences from the Hong Kong martial arts films of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Originally sent to Earth by his parents as an infant, Kakarot was adopted by Grandpa Gohan and given the name Son Goku. A head injury at an early age altered Goku's memory, ridding him of his initial destructive nature and allowing him to grow up to become one of Earth's greatest defenders. Goku constantly strives and trains to be the greatest warrior possible, which has kept the Earth and the universe safe from destruction multiple times.
Son Gohan 孙悟饭

Son Gohan (孫そん悟ご飯はん Son Gohan, Japanese pronunciation: [sõŋgohãɴ]) is a half-breed Saiyan and one of the most prominent characters in the Dragon Ball series. He is the elder son of the series' primary protagonist Goku and his wife Chi-Chi, the older brother of Goten, the husband of Videl and father to Pan. He is named after Goku's adoptive grandfather, Gohan. Unlike his father, Gohan is a brilliant scholar and lacks a passion for fighting, preferring to do so only when his loved ones are threatened. Nevertheless, he spends much of his life participating in the defense of Earth, often helping to turn the tides when the dormant depths of his power are unleashed
Piccolo 比克
比克（日文名：ピッコロ、英文名：Piccolo），日本漫画《龙珠》及其衍生作品中的角色，Z战士之一。由古川登志夫配音。来自那美克星的那美克星人，曾是企图征服世界的邪恶大魔王，将孙悟空视为宿敌，但随着孙悟空、孙悟饭父子对其之影响，内心逐渐产生改变，最终改邪归正并保护地球。 Piccolo (ピッコロ, Pikkoro) is the spawn of King Piccolo, created to get revenge on Goku in the wake of his death, and subsequently assumes the role as the "evil half" of Kami. However, after being narrowly defeated by Goku, he must team up with him and his friends when opposing the invading Saiyans, including training Goku's son Gohan. He is later revealed to be a Namekian—a green-skinned, four-fingered, hairless humanoid species who created the series' titular Dragon Balls. He dies sacrificing himself to protect Gohan during the fight against the Saiyan Nappa and trains in the afterlife under King Kai before being wished back to life by the Namekian Dragon Balls. While he temporarily maintains the partnership during the fights with Frieza and the Androids, by the time of the Cell and Majin Buu arcs he accepts the fact they are allies.
Garlic Jr. 卡里克二世
卡里克二世（ガーリック・ジュニア，Garlic Jr），日本经典动漫《龙珠》及其衍生作品中的反派角色，首次出现于七龙珠剧场版，其父卡里克曾与地球的神仙争夺神仙之位，后来失败，并扬言300年后会回来报仇。300年后，卡里克死亡，他的儿子卡里克二世来复仇，他先是用龙珠得到不死的生命，后来打败神仙，说要征服世界。最后被孙悟饭打入自己制造的漩涡里。后来从旋涡逃出，再次复仇。虽然争到神仙地位，但最后再次被孙悟饭打到自己制造的漩涡里。
Garlic Jr. (ガーリックＪｒジュニア Gārikku Junia, lit. "Garlic Junior") is the main antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. Though he was defeated in Dead Zone, he reappears as the main antagonist in the Garlic Jr. Saga.
Ginger
Ginger (ジンジャー Jinjā) is one of Garlic Jr.'s original trio of henchmen in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. The smallest of the three, Ginger is the one who most closely resembles Garlic Jr. in his overall appearance, except for his skull-like nose which gives him the appearance of a vampire bat. He has dark olive skin and red eyes, and he is typically seen wearing a large dark cloak.
Krillin 克林
(クリリン；英语：Kuririn)，是日本漫画作家鸟山明在集英社《周刊少年Jump》连载的《龙珠》虚构角色。一颗光头，没有鼻子，矮小的身材，克林是一个造型简单的人物。作者的创作初衷似乎在设计一位标准的小和尚，向功夫的泰斗少林寺致敬。初登场的克林是悟空在龟仙流的同门师兄弟，也可以说是竞争对手。当时他给人的印象是坏坏的，老是想歪点子赢过悟空，而且还有些好色，和师傅龟仙人臭味相投。不过随着故事的发展，克林的性格逐渐变得和悟空一样正义而单纯（据声优推测是受悟空的影响吧），并且是在爱情上专一的好男人。他被弗利萨杀害时，悟空极度愤怒而变身为传说中的战士超级赛亚人。他在爱情上的付出也有所回报，娶到了心目中的女神18号。雅木茶则认为克林是最强的地球人。以上种种，均可见作者对这一角色之青睐。 Krillin (クリリン, Kuririn) is a bald martial artist and one of Goku's best friends and classmates. He and Goku are under the tutelage of Master Roshi; initially his rival but later a friend, and a loyal companion in adventures thereafter. He is killed by King Piccolo's spawn Tambourine, but is later revived by Shenron. After the fight with the Saiyans, he travels to Planet Namek, where he is killed by Frieza. After being brought back to life again by the Namekian Dragon Balls, he helps out during the Android and Cell arcs. He is married to Android 18 and has a daughter, Marron (マーロン, Māron).
Master Roshi 龟仙人

He trained Grandpa Gohan and Ox-King, Goku, and Krillin, and a few others. He is often accompanied by his talking sea turtle companion, Umigame (ウミガメ, "Sea Turtle"), who often tries to point out his flaws. Master Roshi was trained by Master Mutaito (武泰斗), who also trained his cohorts-turned-rival Tsuru-Sen'nin (鶴仙人, "Crane Hermit"); he has also received additional training from Korin. When he appears anonymously in the World Martial Arts Tournament, Master Roshi uses the name "Jackie Chun" (ジャッキー・チュン, Jakkī Chun), wears a wig, and discards his sunglasses.

Kame 乌龟
Turtle (ウミガメ Umigame, lit. "Sea Turtle") is Master Roshi's friend and long-time companion. The good-natured, lovable turtle lives in Kame House with the elderly hermit.
Bulma 布马
（日语：ブルマ；英语：Bulma），日本漫画作家鸟山明的漫画《龙珠》原作与改编的系列中登场的人物。也是系列中主角·孙悟空的第一位同伴。万能胶囊公司董事长布里夫博士的女儿，IQ极高的天才科学家。为得到浪漫的爱情而收集龙珠、并与孙悟空等人展开大冒险。起初与雅木茶为男女朋友，后因忍受不了雅木茶沾花惹草而分手。那美克星篇结束后与贝吉塔先后生下了特兰克斯与布拉。
Bulma (ブルマ, Buruma) first appears as a teenager using the Dragon Radar, a fictional device she created to detect the energy signal emitted by Dragon Balls. She is led to Goku's location by the signal emitted by the four-star ball in his possession and recruits him as a bodyguard while hoping to get his four-star ball to grant her wish for a boyfriend. She gives up on the wish after meeting Yamcha, and much later in the series, she marries Vegeta. Bulma has also assumed the role of inventor and has consistently provided critical tech support to Goku and his friends in their battles against various enemies and threats throughout the series. Some of her notable innovations include a microband that could make her shrink and a time machine that brought her son from an alternate future timeline, Trunks, to the past on multiple occasions.
Chi-Chi 琪琪
琪琪，日本经典动漫《龙珠》及其衍生作品中的角色。牛魔王的女儿、孙悟空的妻子。幼时与孙悟空在火焰山相遇，并定下婚约。后在第23届天下第一武道会上与已成年的孙悟空重逢并完婚，婚后育有两子—孙悟饭、孙悟天。婚后的琪琪成为典型的教育型妈妈，但依然有着贤妻良母的一面。
Chi-Chi (チチ) is Goku's wife, Gohan and Goten's mother, and Pan's grandmother. She and Goku first meet as children when her father, the Ox-King, asks Goku to take her to Master Roshi's house. In a misunderstanding, Goku promises to marry her. Years later, she confronts him about his promise at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, and they get married. As the matriarch of the family, she is depicted as being overprotective of Gohan's well-being and wishes to interrupt Goku's lifestyle of fighting and constant conflict. She relaxes her stance with her younger son Goten, even training him herself.
Ox-King 牛魔王
牛魔王，男，日本经典动漫《龙珠》及其衍生作品中的角色，是琪琪的父亲，孙悟空的岳父，龟仙人的旧徒，曾经和孙悟空的爷爷孙悟饭一起修炼。作品初期以反派的形象登场，在琪琪和孙悟空结婚后，他主要以慈祥的家中长辈形象登场。
Gyū-Maō (牛魔王, lit "Ox Demon King"), known as Ox-King in the English anime dub, is the wealthy owner of a castle on Frypan Mountain (フライパン山, Furaipan-yama) and Chi-Chi's father. He is loosely based on the Bull Demon King from Journey to the West. He was trained in martial arts by Master Roshi alongside Goku's adoptive grandfather, Grandpa Gohan. Despite his imposing name and stature, he possesses a gentle and laid-back personality in contrast to Chi-Chi.
Shenron 神龙
Kami 神
Kami (神かみ様さま Kami-sama, lit. "God", "Deity", or "Divine Being") was the former Guardian of the Earth, and the good counterpart of King Piccolo. Throughout a majority of the story, the character known as Kami was a wise Namekian, who alongside Piccolo, was once a single being, who no longer remembered his real name, although it was revealed that he was the son of Katas. He hatched on Namek in Age 242 and, as a child, was launched by Katas into outer space in a Namekian spaceship which requires at least a basic knowledge of the Namekian language to pilot. The Nameless Namekian later learnt of the Guardian of the Earth, and that its role could be passed down, but only to those pure of heart. Thus, the Namekian split himself into being, while simultaneously expelling the darkness within him. The remaining good half became Kami, while the evil expunged became King Piccolo. Kami is also the Namekian that created Earth's Dragon Balls.
Shenron 神龙
神龙，日本经典动漫《龙珠》及其衍生作品中的角色。传说，世界上散落着7颗龙珠，各有一至七颗不等的五角星标记，集齐7颗龙珠念出咒语，就能召唤神龙，并能向其许一个愿望神龙实现愿望后，7颗龙珠便会自动飞散，变成石头，一年后才可再次使用。《龙珠超》追加新设定：龙珠因制造者的能力，龙珠数量也是不定的；超级龙珠和地球龙珠不一样。
Shénlóng (神龍, Shenron, lit. "Dragon God"), Shenron in Funimation's anime dub, also known as the Eternal Dragon in the Ocean and Funimation dubs and as the Dragon God in the Harmony Gold dub, is the wish-granting dragon summoned when all seven of Earth's Dragon Balls are gathered together. Throughout the series, several rules on the Dragon Balls' use and limitations on Shenron's power are explained. After the wish is granted the balls scatter across the planet, turn to stone, are useless for a year, and cannot be detected by Bulma's Dragon Radar.

Nicky
Nicky (ニッキー Nikkī) is one of Garlic Jr.'s original trio of henchmen in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. Nicky is tall with white hair and blue skin. He sports a set of sharp fangs.
Sansho
Sansho (サンショ Sansho) is one of Garlic Jr.'s original trio of henchmen in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. He had long red-purple sideburns, a muscular body type, and a head that somewhat resembles a pickle. Sansho is the strong and silent type of the group.
