Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Shang-Chi. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, and stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi alongside Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung. In the film, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past when his father Wenwu (Leung), the leader of the Ten Rings organization, draws Shang-Chi and his sister Xialing (Zhang) into a search for a mythical village. A film based on Shang-Chi entered development in 2001, but work did not begin in earnest until December 2018 when Callaham was hired. Cretton joined in March 2019, with the project fast-tracked as Marvel's first film with an Asian lead. The film's title and primary cast were announced that July, revealing the film's connection to the Ten Rings organization, which previously appeared throughout the MCU, and its leader Wenwu. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Marvel Studios film with an Asian director and a predominantly Asian cast. Filming began in Sydney in February 2020 but was put on hold in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed in August before completing in October, with additional shooting occurring in San Francisco. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered in Los Angeles on August 16, 2021, and was released in the United States on September 3, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. It grossed over $432 million worldwide, making it the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2021. It set several box office records and received positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the choreography of the action sequences, exploration and representation of Asian culture, Cretton's direction, and the performances from the cast, particularly those of Liu and Leung. The film received numerous awards and nominations, including a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards. A sequel is in development, with Cretton set to return as writer and director.

Plot
Around a thousand years ago, Xu Wenwu discovers the mystical ten rings which grant godly powers including immortality. He establishes the Ten Rings organization, conquering kingdoms and toppling governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu searches for Ta Lo, a village said to harbor mythical beasts. He travels through a magical forest to the village entrance but is stopped by a guardian, Ying Li. The two fall in love, and when the Ta Lo villagers reject Wenwu, Li chooses to leave with him. They marry and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu abandons his organization and locks away the ten rings. When Shang-Chi is seven years old, Li is murdered by Wenwu's enemies, the Iron Gang. Wenwu dons the ten rings once again, massacres the Iron Gang, and resumes leadership of his organization. He makes Shang-Chi undergo brutal training in martial arts but does not allow Xialing to train with the others, prompting her to secretly teach herself. When Shang-Chi is 14, Wenwu sends him to assassinate the Iron Gang's leader. After completing his mission, a traumatized Shang-Chi runs away to San Francisco and adopts the name "Shaun". In the present day, Shang-Chi works as a parking valet with his best friend Katy, who does not know about his past. They are attacked on a bus by the Ten Rings organization, who steal a pendant that Li gave to Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi travels to Macau to find his sister, fearing that the Ten Rings will go after her matching pendant. He reveals his past to Katy, who insists on helping him. They find Xialing at a secret fight club, which she founded after escaping from Wenwu at sixteen. The Ten Rings attack the fight club, and Wenwu arrives to capture Shang-Chi, Katy, Xialing, and her pendant. They are taken to the Ten Rings' compound, where Wenwu uses the pendants to reveal a mystical map leading to Ta Lo. Wenwu explains that he has heard Li calling and believes she has been held captive in Ta Lo behind a sealed gate. He plans to destroy the village unless they release her. When his children and Katy object, he imprisons them. The three meet former actor Trevor Slattery, whom the Ten Rings imprisoned for impersonating Wenwu, and his hundun companion Morris, who offers to guide them to Ta Lo. The group escapes and goes to Ta Lo, which exists in a separate dimension with various Chinese mythological creatures. They meet Ying Nan, Li's sister, who explains the history of Ta Lo: thousands of years ago, the universe containing the village was attacked by the soul-consuming Dweller-in-Darkness and its soul eaters, but was saved by a Chinese dragon called the Great Protector who helped seal the Dark Gate to the Dweller's world. According to Nan, the Dweller-in-Darkness has been impersonating Li so that Wenwu will use the ten rings to open the Gate. Shang-Chi, Xialing, Katy, Slattery, and Morris join the villagers in training and preparing for Wenwu's arrival, using outfits and weapons crafted from dragon scales. Wenwu and the Ten Rings arrive and attack. Wenwu overpowers Shang-Chi, pushes him into the nearby lake, and attacks the Gate with the rings. This allows some of the Dweller's soul eaters to escape, and the Ten Rings join forces with the villagers to fight them. The Great Protector revives Shang-Chi and bears him from the lake to battle the soul eaters. Wenwu and Shang-Chi fight once more, and Shang-Chi gains the upper hand but chooses to spare Wenwu. The Dweller-in-Darkness escapes from the weakened Gate and attacks Shang-Chi. Wenwu saves Shang-Chi, bequeathing him the rings before the Dweller-in-Darkness kills him. Shang-Chi, the Great Protector, Xialing, and Katy slay the Dweller-in-Darkness. Afterward, Shang-Chi and Katy return to San Francisco, where the sorcerer Wong summons them to Kamar-Taj. In a mid-credits scene, Wong introduces Shang-Chi and Katy to Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers while researching the rings' origin. They discover that the rings are acting as a beacon to something. In a post-credits scene, Xialing becomes the new leader of the Ten Rings, training women alongside men, despite having told Shang-Chi that she would disband the organization.

一千年来，军阀徐文武靠着神器“十环”的威力成立了强大的“十环帮”，四处南征北战且长生不老，在世界各地掌握地下资源和左右各国的局势。1996年，文武开始寻找神秘村庄大罗，企图得到其中的力量，却迷失于大罗外围的森林迷宫，并遇见大罗的守护者映丽。映丽以太极拳击退了文武，两人却因此机缘坠入爱河，文武追求大罗力量的企图无疾而终。为了成全爱情，映丽必须离开大罗，文武则解散了十环帮并封印十环。几年后，已为人母的映丽跟年幼的儿子徐尚气说自己为了与文武一起来到外界生活，已经把大罗之力归还给大罗的守护者神龙，但尚气却不知为何拥有这股力量。时间到了2024年，尚气改名为尚恩并在美国旧金山跟朋友凯蒂过着普通人的生活，人生漫无目的。某天他们坐公车上班时遇上十环帮的干部剃刀拳率领帮众来夺取映丽生前留下的坠饰，尚气虽然以高超的武艺击败了对方，但坠饰仍被抢走。尚气随即联想到妹妹徐夏灵最近从澳门寄来一张没内容的明信片，认为夏灵可能会遭遇相同危险，于是跟凯蒂共赴澳门。在飞机上尚气解释在映丽死后，文武决定将尚气训练成杀手，并在尚气14岁时给他第一个任务，但尚气不愿意杀人，于是离家出走并改名过着普通人的生活。到了澳门，尚气追踪线索至一家地下拳馆，并看见至尊魔法师王和憎恶在打拳，二人其后返回一所监狱。在拳馆经理壮壮的安排下，尚气在擂台上与夏灵重逢，惊讶之际被对方痛殴一顿，夏灵表示当年尚气逃家抛下自己不顾，六年后终于下定决心跟着逃家自行在外闯荡，但自己并未寄过尚气口中的明信片。尚气意识到这一切都是圈套之时，十环帮经已赶到，双方发生一阵激斗。尚气打败十环帮的干部死亡商人后，文武现身以十环压制他，更用凯蒂的性命逼兄妹二人回家。众人回到十环帮总部，文武表示多年以来兄妹二人的行踪一直在他掌握中，现在希望子女助他一臂之力攻打大罗，因为映丽正被大罗的其他守护者囚禁。他多年来研究森林迷宫，得知迷宫会在清明节期间开启入口，同时借着兄妹二人的坠饰，成功启动总部内的迷宫地图，并从中得知安全路径。兄妹觉得文武陷入妄想，映丽明明多年前已经确定死亡，不可能还活着。由于两名子女拒绝协助，文武下令将他们关入大牢。在大牢中，尚气一行人遇到曾以“满大人”之名假扮文武的英国演员崔佛·史拉特利，他因此冒犯到文武而被十环帮软禁，被软禁的还有崔佛饲养，被他命名为莫里斯的一只帝江。众人逃出监狱后决定阻止文武，在莫里斯的指引下，他们成功穿过森林进入大罗村，遇见许多村民。映丽的妹妹映南现身，并将真相告知众人，自古以来大罗村的村民与其守护者神龙负责封印来自异次元的灵魂吸食者（噬魂者）。噬魂者虽被封印千年，但会利用心电感应引诱有能力的人前来打开封印，文武就是被噬魂者所蛊惑。众人开始准备以龙麟制成的武器以面对文武的大军，凯蒂也自告奋勇地练习射箭。大战前夕，尚气向凯蒂自揭身世。原来当年文武归隐后，仇家铁刀帮趁文武不在带着多人上门报仇，映丽寡不敌众被杀。文武在悲愤之下解封十环，重操旧业血洗仇家，并将刺杀幕后主脑的任务交由尚气执行。尚气坦承自己在飞机上欺骗了凯蒂——他当年确实完成父亲的任务，逃家在美国生活并非在逃避任务，而是无法面对自己参与复仇的罪恶感。最终尚气决定亲手了结自己的父亲以清除这门血债。文武与十环帮帮众顺利穿过树林进入大罗村，并与村民展开大战。尚气单挑文武不敌，被打入水中。文武此刻仍以为映丽被关在封印的大门后，利用十环破坏封印大门。此时，许多小噬魂者从封印的漏洞飞出，攻击十环帮帮众和大罗村村民，死亡商人被吸走灵魂惨死。剃刀拳眼见情势不对，下令帮众与村民联手抗敌。尚气在水中被大罗的守护者神龙唤醒，获得神龙的力量的同时，更领悟了太极拳法，以借力打力的方法抢走了文武的十环。在给文武最后一击前，尚气回心转意，不愿弑父。噬魂者此时终于突破封印，欲攻击尚气，文武深知铸成大错，决意牺牲自己拯救儿子，并将十环传给尚气。尚气和夏灵二人骑着神龙和噬魂者在空中决斗，期间噬魂者一度抓住神龙并开始吸食它的灵魂，最终在噬魂者差点杀死神龙前，凯蒂射出龙麟箭矢打伤噬魂者，让尚气抓住机会以十环成功消灭噬魂者。大战过后，十环帮帮众与村民共同悼念死去的亲朋好友，尚气与凯蒂结为情侣。回到美国后，两人正跟朋友吹嘘他们最近的冒险时，王突然从传送门中出现，三人一同到卡玛泰姬。布鲁斯·班纳、卡罗尔·丹佛斯和王告知尚气的十环并没有记载在卡玛泰姬的记录中，亦不是地球或其他星球的文明的科技产物，而是一种更高等的武器。但尚气认为这些事情不急需处理，于是尚气、凯蒂和王一起去通宵唱卡啦OK。另一方面，夏灵成为十环帮的新帮主，注视着一批正在训练的男女战士，准备展开行动。

A Di Jiang is a mountain-dwelling god from the “Classic of Mountains and Seas” (山海经 shān hǎi jīng). In the book, Di Jiangs are personifications of Hundun (混沌 hùndùn), the Chinese God of Chaos.
Physically, he’s kind of a pig, or maybe a headless wombat, and also kind of a chicken with those little wings. His mannerisms, though, are somewhat puppy-likeSemantically, Hundun began as a reference to the nebulous world before the separation of earth and heaven. Later it came to mean, among a few other definitions, “unintelligible” and “innocent as a child.”
The Great Protector, also a Dragon 龙 Lóng
They traditionally symbolize auspicious powers and are thus associated with luck, as well as control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. Dragons also have a strong connection to other parts of nature. The Great Protector is depicted in the classical Chinese style as graceful and serpentine with four legs and no wings. She is white and red in color, with nearly indestructible and impenetrable scales that the people of Ta Lo use for armor. This creature is massive, with horns, claws, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. There are softer, feathery groupings of fur along a ridge on her back as well as her tail and head.
Although this creature superficially resembles a Western phoenix, that is not the case. This is a Fenghuang, a bird that reigns over all other birds. Its physical form is a composite of many different real birds including the golden pheasant, mandarin duck, peacock, crane, parrot, and swallow. In Chinese mythology, the bird is sometimes shown this way, and other times it is simply shown with a fireball near it. They are also closely associated with dragons. Because they are said to originate from the sun, fenghuang are celestial creatures with heads that are the sky, eyes that are the sun, backs that are the moon, wings that are the wind, feet that are the earth, and tails that are the planets.
Qi Lin 麒麟 Qí lín
As described in the “Classic of Mountains and Seas,” Qi Lins have heads like a dragon and bodies covered with scales. They are iridescent. Qi Lins are noble and kind; they often appear with a god. They like to help good people, especially those who are filial. A cloven-hoofed, chimerical creature from Chinese legends, the qilin has antlers like a deer and brilliant, jewel-toned scales like a fish or dragon. Historically, the qilin more aptly resembles the giraffe. In the Ming Dynasty, the association between real-life and fantastical beasts equates them both to greatness and power. The physical location of the qilin near the entrance to Ta Lo is extremely significant. In Chinese folklore, qilins are said to appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler. That’s why this creature and its herd are welcoming Shang-Chi and Xialing to their homeland, and the qilin seems to be aware of their bloodline as well as their fated future to defeat the Dweller-in-Darkness.
Nine-Tailed Fox 九尾狐 jiǔ wěi hú
In the “Classic of Mountains and Seas,” nine-tailed foxes are four feet tall, have nine tails and make sounds like a baby. Its wisdom and power are contained in its tails. A new tail grows every 100 years. After a millennium, the nine-tailed fox can ascend to the heavens and join the gods. In the Qin dynasty, the nine-tailed fox was a symbol of peace and prosperity. However, starting in the Song dynasty, the nine-tailed fox gradually became demonized. People started to believe the nine-tailed fox could turn into a beautiful woman and bewitch humans. In some legends, the fox can shift into human form, and its presence is both a good omen and a bad omen depending on the story being told. They are associated with sorcery, protection, mischief, and more. Interpretations have changed over time, as many legends do.
Guardian Lion 石狮 shíshī
Guardian lions (石狮 shíshī) are important mythical creatures in Chinese culture. They are powerful beasts. Known colloquially as Fu / Foo Dogs, shishi — literally “stone lions” — are Chinese imperial guardian lions. They protect buildings, often palaces and Buddhist temples, from harmful spiritual influences and threatening outsiders. Often seen in pairs, the warm-toned beasts are seen in Shang-Chi hovering protectively over the citizens of Ta Lo. They provide mythic protections and other spiritual benefits to those close to them. They have the ability to fight off evil spirits. When stone guardian lions are put in front of architecture, they always come in male-female pairs. The male lions have a ball under one paw and the female lions have a cub under one paw. Unlike the other creatures in this article, Fu Dogs are more of a historical Chinese artifact rather than an animal from folklore. They originate in architecture, with one male representing supremacy and one female representing nurturing. In Shang-Chi, all of the lions are depicted with large manes and tusks, with unspecified gender. And they can all easily rip apart the soul-consuming demons that attack Ta Lo.
